Why develop automotive magnesium alloys? Because the global magnesium resources are very rich, more than 20 billion tons of dolomite magnesium ore have been discovered in China, more than 3 billion tons of magnesite, and 4 billion tons of magnesium chloride in salt lakes, accounting for more than 70% of the world's coal resources. Magnesium alloy has very good performance potential, and it has great application prospects in the transportation field, and has great potential for energy saving and emission reduction.

The high specific strength of magnesium alloy is obviously higher than that of aluminum alloy and steel, which can reduce the weight of the car. Good shock absorption performance can achieve vehicle shock absorption and noise reduction, and also has the characteristics of shielding electromagnetic radiation. At the same time, the elastic modulus of magnesium alloy is similar to that of bone material, which can degrade and achieve 100% recycling. Therefore, magnesium alloys can be used in various parts of automobiles, and there is a higher demand on the hub.

However, magnesium alloys have poor plasticity, poor corrosion resistance, and difficulty in forming. The strength and plasticity of magnesium alloys are a pair of contradictions, so the balance optimization of strength and plasticity is an urgent problem to be solved.

At this stage, research on magnesium alloy technology is carried out with high strength, high plasticity, high flame retardancy and high damping. It is reported that in the automotive field, magnesium alloys have been used in dozens of parts such as steering wheel brackets, display brackets and air conditioning brackets. In the application, the target of magnesium alloy in the future is 30~100kg; in the motorcycle market, magnesium alloy wheels, cylinder blocks, top covers and other components have been developed and applied, and the amount of magnesium alloy for bicycle is about 3~10kg; in the field of rail transit Magnesium alloys are used in side wall profiles, longitudinal beams, upper table and other components. High-speed rail, subway and light rail have been applied to magnesium alloys on a large scale.

China's magnesium alloy consumption has increased from more than 3,000 tons at the beginning of this century to 140,000 tons in 2016. In the next 5 to 10 years, new breakthroughs will be made in the performance of magnesium alloys, development of high-strength and high-plastic deformation magnesium alloys, development of low-cost high-strength and high-plastic magnesium alloys, and development of low-cost and high-performance cast magnesium alloys. The demand for magnesium alloys in the automotive industry in the future will reach 1.5 to 2 million tons.
